Many residents rely on large refillable bottles delivered to their door, others boil tap water, and a growing number install a water purifier under the kitchen sink. This guide explains how Istanbul’s water reaches your tap, what an under-sink purifier actually does, what to look for when choosing one, and how Hofmain installs and services these systems. Can you drink tap water in Istanbul?

Istanbul’s mains water is treated by the city water utility, İSKİ, and disinfected with chlorine before it is distributed. At the treatment plant the water is intended to meet drinking water standards. The difficulty is what happens between the plant and your glass. Water travels through a long network of city mains, then through your building’s pipes and, in many buildings, through a rooftop or basement storage tank and a booster pump.

In practice, this means the water at your tap can differ from the water that left the plant. Common issues people notice include:

• Chlorine taste and smell: Chlorine keeps water safe in the network but many people dislike its taste, especially in tea and coffee.
• Limescale: Hard water leaves white deposits in kettles, on taps and in coffee machines.
• Sediment and rust: Older buildings with metal pipes, or poorly maintained building tanks, can add particles and a brownish tint.
• Changing taste: The taste can vary from season to season and from neighbourhood to neighbourhood.

For these reasons, most households in Istanbul do not drink water straight from the tap, even though the source water is treated. A purifier addresses the issues that arise after the water leaves the treatment plant.

Why people in Istanbul use water purifiers

The alternative to a purifier is usually bottled water. Large 19-litre refillable bottles are common in Istanbul, but they come with practical drawbacks: you have to order and store them, carry heavy bottles, keep the dispenser clean, and the cost adds up over the years. Small plastic bottles create a large amount of waste.

An under-sink purifier gives you treated water straight from a dedicated tap in your kitchen. You can use it for drinking, tea and coffee, cooking, baby formula and washing vegetables. Because the membrane removes most of the dissolved minerals responsible for limescale, kettles and coffee machines also stay cleaner for longer. Many families find that, once installed, they simply stop thinking about drinking water logistics.

How an under-sink purifier works

An under-sink purifier connects to the cold water line in your kitchen and to the drain pipe. Water passes through several stages before reaching a separate purified water tap on your countertop:

1. Sediment filter: Catches sand, rust and other particles. Its main job is to protect the filters that follow.
2. Granular activated carbon: Reduces chlorine and chlorine-related taste and odour, and protects the membrane from chlorine.
3. Carbon block: Completes the pre-treatment and catches finer particles.
4. Membrane: Water is pushed under pressure through a very fine membrane that separates most limescale-forming minerals and other dissolved substances. The concentrated water goes to the drain.
5. Storage tank: Purified water collects in a pressurised tank so that it flows quickly when you open the tap. With the standard 8-litre tank you can draw about 6 to 7 litres of purified water per fill, and about 7 to 8 litres on models with a booster pump, because the pump keeps the tank pressure higher.
6. Mineral and pH filter (on some models): Adds magnesium, calcium and potassium back to the purified water to balance the taste.
7. Post carbon filter: Gives the water a final polish before it reaches your glass.

Each stage protects the next. That is why it matters that filters are changed on time and that replacement filters come from the same manufacturer, with the same product codes.

What is inside a Hofmain unit

Hofmain does not use tanks with a plastic outer body that store water in a plastic chamber. The PAE tanks are pressurised expansion tanks: purified water is held inside a rubber bladder, and air pressure around the bladder pushes the water to your tap. The InoxPure Elite model uses a 12-litre stainless steel PAE tank.

How much purified water does the tank give?

The litre figure printed on a tank is its total volume, not the amount of water you can draw. Part of the tank is taken up by the air cushion that pushes the water out. In practice, Hofmain’s 8-litre tanks give about 6 to 7 litres of purified water per fill on models without a pump, and about 7 to 8 litres on pumped models (TurboHome Pro and AquaNova Europa Elite). After the tank is emptied, the unit refills it automatically; refill time depends on your water pressure and temperature.

About NSF certification

NSF is an independent testing and certification organisation based in the United States. Its certificates are issued for specific components and specific standards, not for an entire appliance. For example, NSF/ANSI 42 covers the reduction of chlorine, taste, odour and particulates.

In Hofmain units, the filters, the storage tank and the connecting tubing are NSF certified. The casing and some small fittings do not carry NSF certification, so we do not describe any unit as “fully certified”. You can check the NSF/ANSI 42 listings for Global Water Solutions filters yourself on the NSF certified product listings. If a seller tells you a product is certified, it is always worth asking which component, and which standard.

How much water is wasted?

Membrane systems send some water to the drain, and you may have read alarming figures online, such as “100 litres wasted for every litre of drinking water”. That is not accurate. On Istanbul mains water, a correctly installed unit produces roughly 1.5 glasses of drain water for every glass of purified water, and at most about 2.

The ratio depends on water pressure, water hardness, the condition of the pre-filters and the flow restrictor fitted on the drain line. On low-pressure supplies, a model with a booster pump works more efficiently and sends less water to the drain.

Which model is right for you?

Low water pressure or a high floor

If water flows weakly from your taps, you live on an upper floor or your building’s booster pump is weak, choose a pumped model: TurboHome Pro or AquaNova Europa Elite. AquaNova Europa Elite is made in Taiwan as a special edition for Spain and imported to Turkey; it has an enclosed casing, electronic leak protection and a start-stop pump. The pump keeps the membrane working efficiently, fills the tank faster and reduces drain water.

Taste is your priority

Membrane-purified water is very soft and some people find it flat. Models with a mineral and pH filter (TurboHome Pro and Platinum Mineral) add minerals back to balance the taste; measured pH is usually between 8 and 8.5. Magnesium Elite adds magnesium in its final filter.

Limited space under the sink

If your sink cabinet also houses a dishwasher connection, waste bin or gas pipes, InoxPure Elite’s slim body (36 × 9 × 41 cm) and separately placed tank make installation easier. Send us a photo of your cabinet and we will tell you what fits.

Budget and running costs

Magnesium Elite has the lowest purchase price and the lowest annual filter cost. Apex USA has the highest of both because of its imported US-made components.

Installation and service

Our own team installs every unit; we do not use subcontractors. A standard under-sink installation takes about 20 to 30 minutes on site, not counting travel time. The installation day is planned according to our service route in your area:

1. We check the space under your sink, the water connection and the drain, and measure the TDS (total dissolved solids) of your tap water.
2. We fit a feed valve on the cold water line and a drain clamp on the waste pipe.
3. We drill a hole in the countertop for the purified water tap. Tell us in advance whether your worktop is granite, marble, quartz, composite or laminate.
4. We check the tank pressure, test every connection for leaks and flush the new filters.
5. We measure the TDS and pH of the purified water with you, so you can see the difference.

Installation is free in Istanbul, except in Şile, Çatalca and the Princes’ Islands. Home units carry a 3-year warranty; during the warranty our technicians come to your home free of charge if anything goes wrong. You never have to dismantle the unit and ship it. Whether a visit can happen on the same day depends on the time you call and that day’s service route. Tips for expats and renters

Many of our English-speaking customers rent their homes. A few practical points:

• Ask your landlord: Installation requires a small hole in the countertop for the tap. Most landlords agree, but it is good practice to ask first.
• Moving out: When you move, the unit can come with you. We can remove it and reinstall it at your new address; the fee and date are agreed by phone.
• Writing instead of calling: If you prefer to write, WhatsApp is the easiest way to reach us. You can send photos of your sink cabinet and your address details in writing.
• Building tanks: If your building has a rooftop tank, sediment can be higher. We may suggest more frequent pre-filter changes.
• Payment: You pay after installation by card, cash or bank transfer. An invoice and warranty certificate are provided on the day.

Filter changes and running costs

On Istanbul mains water, the three pre-filters (sediment, granular carbon and carbon block) are usually changed every 8 to 12 months depending on use. The timing for the mineral filter, post carbon filter and membrane is decided from TDS and pH measurements during service visits.

We always tell you the exact price before changing anything. Filters are consumables and are not covered by the warranty. Units without a pump use no electricity; on pumped models, the pump runs only while the tank is filling.

Systems for cafés and restaurants

For cafés, tea houses, restaurants and commercial kitchens, we offer two systems. ProCafe 40 (35,000 TL) is a 5-stage system for small and medium-sized businesses, with a 40-litre pressurised tank and a 300, 400 or 500 GPD membrane depending on demand. It can feed tea boilers, coffee and espresso machines and ice machines. ProEndüstri 80X (45,000 TL) is designed for high-demand kitchens, with five high-capacity membranes and a 40 or 80-litre tank, and can also supply dishwashers.

Limescale damages heating elements in tea boilers and espresso machines, so purified water also reduces machine maintenance. Business systems carry a 2-year warranty with free on-site service in Istanbul during the warranty period.
